Ferrofluid Kit

An experiment kit that lets you directly observe and handle the unique motion and magnetic-field response of ferrofluid. It consists of ferrofluid plus cleaning, etching, and coating agents, so you can experience both ferrofluid experiments and surface treatment.

It can be used for science education, school experiments, exhibition experiences, content creation, and research demos.

Observe magnetic response

Directly observe the spike shapes of ferrofluid reacting to a magnet.

Hands-on making

Experience making and handling ferrofluid using the components.

Education & exhibition

Used for science education, exhibitions, content creation, and research demos.

Ferrofluid kit

What can you do with the ferrofluid kit?

The kit contains four liquids — ferrofluid, clear base liquid, coating agent and etching agent — so you can build a ferrofluid display in a glass vessel yourself and watch the fluid spike in response to a magnet. It is used in school and science-museum classes, exhibition activities, content production and research demonstrations.

What does each of the four components do?
The ferrofluid is the black fluid that responds to a magnet, and the clear base liquid is what holds it. The coating agent prevents the ferrofluid from staining the glass wall, and the etching agent smooths the inner glass surface so staining is less likely.
Why does ferrofluid form spikes?
In a magnetic field the fluid tries to rise along the field lines, while surface tension and gravity push it back flat. The regular spike pattern appears where those forces balance.
Does the finished display last?
Neither the ferrofluid nor the base liquid contains volatile solvents, so there is virtually no evaporation at room temperature (up to 25℃). The ferrofluid holds RoHS certification, and a durability test running 1,000 hours at 500 rpm showed almost no change in shape or chemical reaction.
What kind of vessel should be used?
Glass only. Every other material tested produced staining. The smoother the inner glass surface, the lower the chance of staining. The vessel must be sourced separately — MAGRON does not supply it.

Component Details

1Ferrofluid (Ferrofluid)

Ferrofluid (Ferrofluid)

A functional fluid in which magnetic nanoparticles are stably dispersed in a liquid. Bringing a magnet close aligns the particles along the field, forming pointed spike shapes.

  • When reacting to a magnet, nanoparticles align along the field to form spike shapes.
  • A non-volatile base oil keeps its shape and performance for a long time.
  • The core component of the kit — the reference fluid for experiments and observation.

2Clear liquid (cleaning solution) (Clear liquid)

Clear liquid (cleaning solution) (Clear liquid)

A clear solution used to dilute and clean ferrofluid. Use it to clean up residual ferrofluid after experiments or to adjust concentration.

  • Used for diluting and cleaning ferrofluid.
  • Can be used to clean tools and containers after experiments.
  • Its transparency makes ferrofluid motion easy to observe.

3Etching agent (Etching agent)

Etching agent (Etching agent)

A solution for surface etching. It corrodes and processes the target surface to create a state where ferrofluid can react stably.

  • Used for surface etching.
  • The amount and time vary with the surface condition of the target.

※ Cleaning and post-treatment are required after etching. Handle with care for safety.

4Coating agent (Coating agent)

Coating agent (Coating agent)

A solution for surface coating and protection. It forms a protective film on the surface to enhance durability and stability.

  • Used for surface coating and protection.
  • Helps improve the reaction stability of ferrofluid after coating.

※ For the exact usage and processing order, please contact us and we will guide you.

Quantity & Packaging

Ferrofluid is supplied in 100 ml units, and the cleaning, etching, and coating agents in 1,000 ml units. The configuration can be adjusted to your purpose and quantity.

Operating Principle

Ferrofluid is a fluid in which magnetic nanoparticles coated with a surfactant are uniformly dispersed in a base oil. Normally it flows like an ordinary liquid, but when an external magnetic field is applied, the particles align along the magnetic field lines.

Surface tension and magnetic force then balance, producing the characteristic pointed spike pattern of ferrofluid. Changing the magnet's strength and position also changes the shape and motion of the pattern.

Ferrofluid is a "liquid that responds to magnets," creating patterns that seem alive as the magnetic field changes.

How to Use

Using the kit components, you can proceed step by step from surface treatment to ferrofluid application. See the video and catalog below for the detailed process.

  1. 1Prepare the kit components (ferrofluid, cleaning liquid, etching agent, coating agent) and experiment tools.
  2. 2Treat the experiment surface or target with the etching agent, then clean it thoroughly with the cleaning liquid.
  3. 3Coat the surface with the coating agent to form a protective film.
  4. 4Apply ferrofluid to the desired spot and check its reaction with a magnet.
  5. 5When finished, clean the tools and surface with the cleaning liquid.
